How Much Is That Dollar Really Worth?
How much is that piece of paper in your wallet really worth? Is it the value on the bill or is it the time you worked to get that bill?
In an economy that places such a high value on things, it’s no wonder we have forgotten what the true worth of a dollar really is. We no longer see its value in terms of the time we have put into earning those things and that can cost us days—even years—of our life.
Stop and think for a moment. How much do you make in one hour?
If you make $6 an hour and milk cost $3.95 per gallon you have worked 39 1/2 minutes for a gallon of milk. That is 39 minutes away from your favorite book. That is 39 minutes away from your favorite sporting event. That’s 39 minutes of working a job you very well may not like. And that’s 39 minutes away from your family and friends.
Doesn’t sound too bad, after all, we all need to eat, right?
Then let’s stop and think about it in terms of debt. If you make $10 an hour and have to pay out $100 in debt per month, that is 10 hours of your life. You have given up ten hours of your life to pay for something that you have already used and long forgotten. You have given up ten hours of your life to stress over how you are going to pay that debt off, in full, in the future. And, you have given up ten hours of your life that you could have been spending with someone that you love.
Now think about your credit card bills. What’s your total? Do you even recall all the things you’ve charged over the years to reach that total? How many hours of your life is it going to take to pay off that total? Do you really think it’s worth your future to continue paying for the past when you cannot even remember what it was you just had to have?
Having a fresh prospective on what that dollar bill is really worth can change our lives forever. It can mean the difference between getting into more debt or getting out of debt. And, it can mean the difference between working overtime or spending that time with the ones that we love the most.
